Summer 1770

Mary Quarram guilty of the murder, by drowning, of her 15 month old grandson John Quarram.  She was ordered for execution on Wednesday 15 August:  this was respited initially for 9 days and “until further notice” on 8 September.  In the margin of the respite appears the following comment “Mr Justice Ashurst desired she might have an unlimited reprieve as by that means she would be kept in prison out of the way of doing further mischief.”  She was not hanged.
